Sand sharks

Does anyone remember a cartoon from the mid 1990's called Sand Sharks?  If you do, please contact me.  I had not heard of it, but one of the guys on the hike today watched it when it was on.

This is important because today we went to the beach hike and they were shooting a sci-fi movie called Sand Sharks.  I just shook my head because the name of the movie sounds stupid and I think I can figure out the "plot" of the movie.

I also noticed that there was a light camera crew compared to the Miller Lite commercial, so this movie might be a budget movie, B-movie, or straight to DVD movie.  I want to see the movie just because I saw some of the filming, but it sounds so stupid that I don't know if I want to waste that much time of my life.

However, the beach hike is always great.  Here's how the system goes.  On Monday, everyone get assigned a hike and the purpose is to be evaluated by the hiking guides.  We are placed with other people at our skill level for the rest of the week.

This week I have been assigned to the advanced group again.  There are two vans in the advanced group and I am in the first van, so you could say that I am the advanced, but not super advanced group.  Since the beach hike is popular, every van gets assigned this hike once per week.  Then on Saturday, we get to sign up for the hike and the beach hike is always an option.

Hiking on the beach never gets old for me because there's always something going on at the beach and seeing dolphins never gets old.  After the beach section, we take a pretty steep trail up the cliff.  There are a lot of stairs and it winds around some.

Earlier I have had to stop at least once on this trail up the cliff because it is steep, but today I went all the way up without stopping.  I was at the front of the pack and wanted to go at my own speed because I know the way, but the guide wanted us to stay together as much as possible.

So, I went ahead of the group, then backtracked to meet the group, and repeated this cycle the entire time.  When we get at the top of the cliff, there is another peak called Point Dume`, so we follow the trail around it and then go up to the top of the point.  Then, those that want to, can go back down and take the stairs down on the other side to the other section of beach where the overturned boat is.

Today as a group we made it to the top of Point Dume`.  I was slightly disappointed because I wanted to make it to the boat or further.  It is alright because, like I said, I am in the advanced group and we will probably do some tough hikes this week.  Also, one of the workers from this area said the winds will be picking up for tomorrow, so this will add another challenge to the hikes.

I didn't take some pictures of the Sand Shark filming because it was too cheesy.  I didn't know if I should laugh or cry.  However, I did take some pictures of Point Dume and the beach section on the other side with the boat.

Here is a picture of Point Dume` from the top of the cliff.  The trail winds around to the right of the hill, goes all the way around, then goes up to the top of the left side of the picture.

Here is a picture taken from the top of Point Dume` that shows the second beach section.  The boat is barely visible from the picture, but it is a tiny white spec on the beach in the middle of that long beach section.

After the hike we had pool class and I was frustrated that I didn't get to go down and see the boat, so I took out my frustration on the water.  One of the ladies asked me if I could bring down the intensity so she can keep up with me.  I said no and now it is Tuesday night and I'm wondering if I have enough energy in the tank to get through the week.  I ran out of gas last week on Thursday afternoon and somehow made it through Friday and Saturday.  I'll keep you posted later in the week.

Closing thought for the day:  I see a dichotomy going on here.  The afternoon classes are mostly interval based and change depending on the instructor, so nothing is repetitive in a given class.  When it comes to the hikes, there is a lot more repetition.  Today was my 4th beach hike and it was easier than the time before.
