The Z word

Based on my previous posts, you can probably figure out that the Z word I'm referring to is Zuma Ridge.  Well, today my van was assigned to Zuma Ridge.

Let me explain Zuma Ridge.  It starts by going up, then it goes up some more, and after that, it keeps going up.  When you think it can't possibly go up any more, well, it goes up again.  Do you get the point?

Talking to other people who have hiked Zuma before, supposedly you go down at some point if the hike goes straight through.  Today's hike was there and back, so we went up as far as we could, turned around and went down.

After surviving the hike, I can say that it was just as hard as I expected.  Let's put it another way.  In most vans, there are 12 hikers and 3 guides.  My van lost a few people this week to injury and some people chickened out after hearing the Z word, so we had 6 hikers.  Also, since this is Zuma, we had an extra two guides.  Six hikers and 4 guides.

Based on the spread of the group, there was one guide with me most of the time.  This guide was also with me most of the time on my first hike.  I have noticed a big difference between the first hike and today's hike in my hiking ability.  I was wondering if he noticed it as well and he did.

Obviously I resolved the issues with my feet since the first few hikes, so if nothing else, this is progress.  I took a short video of where I was at the turn around point and another picture on the way down after going on the other side of the hill.

In the video I mentioned there is a section of the hike that flattens out.  It does get flat, but for a short time.

After the hike we played kickball, because after all, when I see "gym class" on the schedule, I immediately think of kickball.  This time around my team won and I got a double play by myself at the very end of the game.

I was playing first base at the time and the kicker kicked the ball straight to me and I caught it.  There was a runner on first who ran for second base when the ball was kicked.  Since the ball was kicked in the air, the runner had to return to first base, which I had already touched.  It was pretty cool.

The middle class in the afternoon was treading because this is Thursday.  I decided to get on the arc trainer for treading and concentrated on speed.  Sam was the trainer for the class and when we hit the three minute level, Sam told me to put the resistance on 50 and slow it down.  I don't know what the units of resistance are on the arc trainer, but I did it.  It was's that bad, for the two minute interval I maxed out the resistance at 100.  Obviously I had to slow down the speed dramatically, but I made it through.

Closing thought for the day:  Today was the toughest day physically since I've been here.  The combination of Zuma Ridge, kickball, and three classes in the afternoon including treading just have me worn out right now.  All of this after doing Castro's Crest and kickboxing class yesterday.  Mentally I'm fine and as a reward, I think I'll make it movie night.
